Dorothy Simmons Paul

   Dorothy was a true original, full of sweetness, light, and just the right amount of sass. She was born to John Fred Simmons and Rosa Isabelle Mauney Simmons of Polkville, the third of four children, and the first of two daughters. She grew up to live a fascinating life, witness to so much history in the making. She worked as a Statistician at the Naval Shipyards in Charleston, SC where she met her husband of 50 years, Allan B. Paul. She left the world of working women to raise their three children. Upon returning to Shelby, NC she joined the workforce once again, and was employed by the Shelby City School system as a secretary at Shelby Jr. High and Jefferson Elementary.

   After retirement from the school system, she volunteered at Cleveland Memorial Hospital in the ICU waiting room and knitted caps for newborns in the nursery. She continued her volunteer work until well into her 90s.

   She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Rosa Simmons, her beloved husband, Allan Paul, her brothers and sisters-in-law Fred Simmons (Eunice), Glenn Simmons (Jeanette) and a grandson, Michael Simmons.

   She is survived by her sister Imogene Carroll of Destin, FL her four children, Randolph Simmons (Marina) of Georgia, Lynda Morrow (Dennis) of the home, Glenn Paul of Fletcher, NC, and Bruce Paul (Lyn) of Shelby, NC. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren, as well as a plethora of nieces and nephews.

   A memorial service will be held at 11:00am Saturday, August 12, 2023, at Cleveland Funeral Services conducted by Rev. Christina Auch.  A visitation will be held from 10:00am – 11:00am prior to the service at the funeral home.  A private burial will be held at Union Baptist Church.
