Herbert Harrell

SHELBY - Herbert "Monk" Harrell, age 74, of Shelby, NC, passed away Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Carolinas Medical Center.
Born April 10, 1942 in Bertie County, NC, he was the son of the late Clifton and Alma Harrell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Rucker and an infant. .
Mr. Harrell was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church and the Kent Russ Sunday School Class. He retired from Cleveland County Schools after 25 years of service. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and enjoyed working in the garden and yard. Monk was a member of the White Oak Hunting Club.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Nellie Harrell; children, Billy Harrell and wife Karin, Sheryl Johnson and husband Royce, Wendy Weatherford and husband David; six grandchildren, Jeremy Harrell, Elizabeth Harrell, Paul Samia Jr., Will Frost, Ashley Frost, Dustin Barkley and wife Stephanie; and two great-grandchildren, Alexa and Emma. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Sue Yelton; two sisters-in-law, Sylvia Mincher and husband Lindsay, Jean Yelton; and lots of nieces and nephews
Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 17, 2017 at Poplar Springs Baptist Church with Rev. Andy Oliver, Rev. Jim Richardson and Rev. Mickey Pruitt officiating. Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. till 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at the church prior to the service.
