Mr. Horace Lee Moore, age 88 of Shelby, NC, passed away Monday, October 27, 2014 at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held 4:00 PM Thursday, October 30, 2014 at Flint Hill Baptist Church. Visitation will be held from 3:00 - 4:00 pm prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at Flint Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
He is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Morgan and husband James of Harrisburg, NC and Louise Lancaster and husband Gary of Shelby, NC, four grandchildren, Dwayne Morgan and wife Terry of Kernersville, NC, Geteia Carpenter and husband James of Harrisburg, NC, Anita Donath and husband Mike of Aiken, SC, and Jeffery Collins and wife Cynthia of Shelby, NC, seven great grandchildren, Katie Morgan and Issac Morgan, both of Kernersville, NC, Clint Carpenter and wife Shelly of Mooresville, NC, Candice Carpenter of Concord, NC, Keith Carpenter and wife Chelsea of Harrisburg, NC, Jessie Harwood and husband Jason of Mooresville, NC and Mallory Collins of Shelby, NC, seven great great grandchildren, Kersten Carpenter, Kaden Carpenter, David Carpenter, Jonathan Carpenter, Bryson Collins, Mabry Faith Harwood, and Scarlet Jo Harwood, and a sister, Evelyn Hamrick of Shelby, NC.
Born March 2, 1926 in Cleveland County, Mr. Moore was the son of the late James Washington and Ada (Kelly) Moore and was preceded in death by his wife, Martha (Thrift) Moore and a sister, Janie Tesseneer. Serving in the United States Army Infantry, Mr. Moore was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious services in Germany when his assault platoon was pinned down by enemy fire emanating from buildings in the vicinity of the city of Breitbach, Germany. Pvt. Moore with utter disregard for his personal safety moved across ground that afforded no cover. Although continually fired upon, he continued his advance until he reached a point 15 yards from the house when he threw a grenade in the window and succeeded in killing one enemy and wounding another. His action was a decisive factor in the company's subsequent success. Horace was also awarded the European-African Middle Eastern Theater Medal with 2 Bronze service stars as well as a Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Moore was a member of the Flint Hill Baptist Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family and animals which he considered family.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Collins, Clint Carpenter, Keith Carpenter, Jimmy Carpenter, Mike Donath, and Dwayne Morgan.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Flint Hill Baptist Church, 2207 Flint Hill Church Road, Shelby NC, 28152 or to the Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Height Drive, Shelby, NC 28152.
