Joel Toney

Mr. Joel Fay Toney, age 75 of Shelby, passed away Monday, June 18, 2018 at Wendover Hospice House in Shelby.
He is survived his wife, Wilma Hawkins Toney of the home, three daughters, Tracy Mertz (Kevin) of Grover, NC, Tonda Toney of Shelby, NC, and Lisa Harris of Ellenboro, NC, six grandchildren, Travis McMurry, Andy Hulsey (Tabitha), Nick Goode, C.J. Toney, Josh Goode (Traci), and T.J. Harris, four great grandchildren, T.T. McMurry, Kayden Hulsey, Jace Hulsey, and Kalynn McMurry, three brothers, Lawrence Toney (Reba) of Mooresboro, NC, Floyd Toney (Juanita) of Forest City, NC, and Ralph Toney (Ruth) of Lattimore, NC, four sisters, Catherine Self of Boiling Springs, NC, Irene Murray (Reid) of Boiling Springs, NC, Cora Crisp of Rutherfordton, NC, and Doris Cash (Chester) of Boiling Springs, NC, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Born September 28, 1942 in Rutherford County, Mr. Toney was the son of the late Miles Smith Toney and Ollie Wright Toney and was preceded in death by a grandson, Cheyenne Toney, two brothers, J.C. Toney and Horace Toney and a sister, Lois Varner.
Joel was a wonderful Christian man. He loved going to church where he directed the choir and taught Sunday school class, and cutting grass with his brother. He served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam conflict. He enjoyed singing and had sung with the Foothills Choir. Joel especially loved spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren.
A visitation will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 pm Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at Cleveland Funeral Services. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Thursday, June 21, 2018 at Gants Grove Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Robert Lane and Rev. Lawrence Toney. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.
