Mr. Gettys, 87, of Shelby, NC passed away Friday, March 13, 2009 at Crawley Memorial Hospital. A native of Sunshine, he retired from Cleveland County Maintenance Department where he was a supervisor. He was a member of the Men's Fellowship Class at Poplar Springs Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy where he served on the USS Battleship Salamaua during WWII.
Mr. Gettys was preceeded in death by his parents James Horace & Malissie Allen Gettys, his 1st. wife Merle Webb Gettys, brothers Eugene, Glen, Roscoe and Marvin Gettys, and a sister Ossie Gettys Cline.
Mr. Gettys is survived by his wife Margaret Edwards Gettys of the home, daughters and their husbands Brenda Pruett & Neal of Lexington, NC, Sheila Curtis & Fred of Chester, SC, Teresa Swink & Bill of Jacksonville, FLA., step sons and wives Don Edwards & Darlene, Burl Edwards & Susie, Aaron Edwards & Barbara, Jody Edwards & Sandra all of Shelby, NC, brothers and wives Hix Gettys & Blanche of Shelby, NC and James Gettys & Dorothy of Polkville, NC.
Mr. Gettys is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren and 12 step great grandchildren.
The family would like to express a special thank you to all the doctors and nurses who cared for Mr. Gettys so lovingly.
Funeral services will be conducted by Dr. Danny West, Rev. Clyde Buckner, Rev. Mel Campos & Dr. Jim Richardson.
