John Whitener

Mr. Whitener, 89, of 302 Trinity Church Road, Mooresboro, NC, passed away Saturday, October 9, 2010 at Hospice at Wendover. A native of Rutherford County, he retired from Dover Mill Company after 32 years of service. He was a longtime member of Sandy Plains Baptist Church and served in the U. S. Navy during WWII. Mr. Whitener was preceded in death by his parents Zebulon & Eva Walker Whitener, his wife Lottie Proctor Whitener, a brother Armond Whitener, a sister and brother-in-law Maude & Robert Campbell, and two brother-in-laws Howard McCurry & D. C. Melton. Mr. Whitener is survived by children, Karen Costner, Zebulon Whitener, Dolores Ridings and husband Billy, Steven Whitener and wife Denise, and Mary Pressley and husband Tracy all of Shelby, NC. In addition to these she is also survived by sisters Darrell McCurry, Nancy Melton, Goldie McSwain and husband Alton, and Noel Powell and husband James, and a sister-in-law Callie Wright. Mr. Whitener has 22 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Garin Hill pastor of Sandy Plains Baptist Church and Dr. Bulo E.
