Mr. Kenneth R. Hughes, age 71 of Shelby, NC, passed away Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at Wendover Hospice in Shelby. Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Friday, November 28, 2014 at Morning Star Baptist Church conducted by Pastor Keith Linzy. Visitation will be held from 1:00 - 2:00 pm prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Shirley Joy (White) Hughes of the home, four daughters, Teresa Joye Hughes of Shelby, NC, Amy Jo Hughes of Shelby, NC Kellie Jean Hughes of Shelby, NC, and Katie Suzanne Hughes of Shelby, NC, two grandsons, Tanner Lamb of Gaffney, SC, and Eli Hughes of Shelby, NC, a brother, Dwight Hughes and wife Mary of Ellenboro, NC, five sisters, Marilyn McSwain of Boiling Springs, NC, Cozette Coats and husband Sam of Cliffside, NC, Patt Brown and husband Don of Bostic, NC, Donnis Gibson and husband Ken of Richland, WA, and Dianne Hewitt of Charlotte, NC and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Born October 2, 1943 in Ellenboro, NC, Mr. Hughes was the son of the late Floyd Harmon and Myrtle Gertrude (Dycus) Hughes. Mr. Hughes graduated from Ellenboro High School. After graduation, he entered the United States Army serving as a Military Police Officer. After an Honorable Discharge, he later continued his education at Cleveland Community College and Limestone College earning a Bachelor's Degree Business Administration. After College, he worked for Smurfit-Stone Corporation as a General Manager retiring after 33 years of faithful service. Kenneth was a member of Morning Star Baptist Church where he served as an active Deacon, a Sunday School Superintendent, and a Receiving Accountant. Kenneth enjoyed camping, tinkering, working on engines, and spending time with his family and friends, especially his two grandsons. Kenneth was a faithful, loving husband and father. He will be missed by everyone that knew him.
Pallbearers will be Paul White, Jonathan Linzy, Buddy Dyer, Steven Steffey, Ernie Blanton, Cody White, and Scott Wood.
The family would like to express a sincere thanks to the staff at Wendover Hospice for the loving care they gave Mr. Hughes.
