Mr. Kenneth Lee Whitley, age 79 of Shelby, NC, passed away Saturday, May 31, 2014 at Wendover Hospice House, Shelby. Memorial services will be held 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Eric Davis and Dr. Tracy Jessup. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Surviving besides his wife of 9 years, Pat Whitley of the home are two daughters, Sonja Small and husband Greg of Mt. Holly, NC and Nancy McManus of Concord, NC, three step-children, Wendal Jones of Charlotte, NC, Regina Pitman and husband Curt of Shelby, NC, and Mark Jones and wife Betsy of Shelby, NC, a brother, James V. Whitley and wife Patricia K. of Sherrills Ford, NC, seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and cousins and special friends, Helen and Gene Beaver.
Born September 1, 1934 in Albemarle, NC, Mr. Whitley was the son of the late L. Roy and Dezzie Mae (Gaddy) Whitley and was preceded in death by his first wife, Rebecca L. Whitley, a sister, Katherine Sue Clark and a brother-in-law, Marvin L. Clark. Mr. Whitley graduated from Albemarle High School in 1952. Kenneth was a member of the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church where he attended the Holbrook Sunday School Class. Serving in the United States Navy, Mr. Whitley worked as a Pipe Fitter on the U.S.S James E. Kyes during the Korean War. He loved fishing, going to the beach, woodworking, and watching his favorite team, the Atlanta Braves. One of his favorite things that he enjoyed doing was spending time with his family, especially during family meals.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church Building Fund, 198 Pleasant Ridge Church Road, Shelby, NC 28152.
