Mrs. Mable Pauline "Polly" Oakes, age 85 of Gastonia, NC, passed away Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at Meadowwood Nursing Center, Gastonia. Funeral services will be held 4:00 pm Friday, July 25, 2014 at Putnam Baptist Church conducted by Pastor Bryan Glisson. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the Church. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.
She is survived by a son, Claude Oakes of Lawndale, NC, a daughter, Christine Hamrick of Shelby, NC, a brother, Bobby McLaurin of Thomasville, NC, three sisters, Doris Tucker of Concord, NC, Mary Sisk and husband James of Kaiser, NC, and Ruth Stern of Florida, three grandchildren, Paula Simonds and husband Michael of Grover, NC, Stephanie Oakes Allen and husband Austin of Shelby, NC, and Jeffery Hamrick of Shelby, NC, and a great granddaughter, Sabrina Hamrick of Shelby, NC.
Born July 2, 1929 in Concord, NC, Mrs. Oakes was the daughter of the late Raymond and Katie (McIntyre) McLaurin and was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Raymond Oaks, a brother, Lloyd McLaurin and a sister, Faye Mathis. Polly was a faithful member of the Putnam Baptist Church. She enjoyed finding bargains at yard sales, going out to eat with her family, walking the beach and reading.
Pallbearers will be Junior Ruff, Kenneth Helms, Dustin Yarboro, Greg Buchanan, Marty Mathis, and Joseph Mathis.
The family would like to express a sincere thanks to the staff at the Life Enrichment Center of Cleveland County for the loving care that they gave Polly.
