Mel Campos

November 16, 1948 — June 28, 2013

Rev. Mel Campos, 64, went to be with the Lord, Friday, June
28, 2013, at Hospice at Wendover after a courageous battle with cancer for the
past year. Mel was born in Waimea, Kauai, Hawaii and was a member of Crestview
Baptist Church of Shelby, where he was the Associate Pastor for the past 7
years.
He was employed at Cleveland Community College from 1974 to 1989 until the
family relocated to Kauai where Mel pastored the Eleele Baptist Church from 1992
to 1998, and then the Oak Ridge Baptist Church in Burke County, NC. Mel led many
mission teams while pastoring churches.
In the past several years he has led many Disaster Relief Mission Teams to
minister in areas following disasters. Mel had a passion for Baptist Men's
ministries teaching Sunday School and prison ministry and helping anyone who had
a need. Mel served on the Executive Board of the Hawaii Pacific Baptist
Convention from 1992-1998.
Along with all his other interest he enjoyed woodworking and spending time
with his family and grandson Izaiah.
Mel graduated from Waimea High School on Kauai in 1966, attended Missouri State
University, and Gardner Webb University in 1972, and received his Masters Degree
from Western Carolina University in 1976. He played professional Baseball with
the Washington Senators from 1969 -1970.
Mel was ordained as a Deacon at Poplar Springs Baptist Church in 1988 and
ordained there into the ministry in 1992.
Mel was preceded in death by his father Prudencio Campos.
He was survived by his wife of 38 years Cindy Campos, Daughters: Melani Campos
of Wilmington, NC; Mindy Campos of Wilmington, NC; Mother Dolores Campos of
Kauai, Hawaii; Sister-in-law Gail Thornton of Boiling Springs, NC; Brothers:
Ernest Campos of Gardena, California; Prudencio Campos Jr. of Honolulu, Hawaii;
Ron Campos of Kauai, Hawaii; Sister Stella Shimatsu of Kauai, Hawaii; Grandson
Izaiah Campos of Wilmington, NC.
Also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
Visitation: The family will receive friends at Poplar Springs BaptistChurch,
Family Life Center, Monday, July 1, 2013 from 2:00 -4:00 P.M.
Celebration of Life Service: Monday, July 1, 4:30 p.m. Poplar Springs Baptist
Church Sanctuary. A special memorial service will be held at Eleele Baptist
Church in Kauai, Hawaii at a later date.
Officiating: Dr. Jim Richardson, the Rev. Stan Webb, Dr. Paul Sorrells
Interment: Beaver Dam Baptist Church Cemetery at a later date.
Memorials: Baptist Men at either Crestview Baptist Church, 1090 Old Boiling
Springs Road, Shelby, NC 28150, Poplar Springs Baptist Church, 1106 Poplar
Springs Church Road, Shelby, NC 28152 or Oak Ridge Baptist Church, 7449 Oak
Ridge Church Road,Connelly Springs, NC 28612. Family headquarters will be at the
home.
The family request that any teammate who has played Baseball or Softball with
Mel please sit in a group at the Celebration of Life Service on Monday.
