Mr. Bell, 57, of 111 Blackhawk Drive, Shelby, NC, passed away Thursday, February 18, 2010 at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Doug was born in Cleveland County, son of the late Jacob and Gladys Bridges Bell and brother of the late Dennis Bell. Doug is survived by his wife of thirty-nine years, the former Terry McMurry Bell of the home; two sisters, Elaine Gettys of Gastonia and Jewell Kendrick of Kings Mountain. Also surviving are three nephews, Mike and Richard Bell and Joe Kendrick, and two nieces, Lori Bell and Leigh Bell. Doug had been disabled for the last seven years but had been a master carpenter working previously for Linton Suttle and last for Marvin Hamrick, developer of the Homestead Acres residential community in Boiling Springs. Doug loved his work and he was regarded as one of the best in his field. Doug also loved animals, always taking in the stray dog or cat that came to his home. He especially loved dogs and there was always a new stray to be taken into the family. Doug enjoyed life and in his youth he was quite the accomplished racer, competing at Shadyside, Greer and the old Shuffletown drag strip. In his Plymouth Road Runner, Doug brought home many trophies for his mantle. Doug will be missed by his family and friends and in his remembrance the family asks that any memorials be directed to the Cleveland County Humane Society, 1609 East Marion Street, Shelby, NC 28150. Funeral services will be conducted by the Rev. Jimmy Black and Dr. Paul Sorrells.
