In her 88th year, Ruby Mae Hamrick Grigg peacefully left this life on February 18, 2012. Though her leaving breaks our hearts, it was a home-going she had prepared for all her life.
Born in Henrietta, she was a lifetime resident of Cleveland County. She was the daughter of the late Forrest Hamrick and Ola Thompson Hamrick. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ben W. Grigg Sr.; sisters, Gladys Wellmon, Pat Jenkins; and brother, Melvin Hamrick.
She is survived by her daughter, Sandra G. Parrish (A.L. III) of Hampton, VA; sons, Ben W. Grigg Jr. (Kathryn) of Shelby and S. Craig Grigg of New York City; sisters, Marie King (Jennings) of Ashe, N.C., Faye Watts (Ralph) of Conover and Jonan Ivie of Summerville, GA; brother-in-law, Hal Grigg (Joan) of New House; grandchildren, Brad W. Grigg (Kristy) of Oak Ridge, Brett Grigg (Penni) of Morganton; great-grandchildren, Lauren, Sydney and Caleb Grigg of Oak Ridge; and many loving nieces and nephews.
She took great pride in having grown up at the Dover Dover Mill Village. Even with the homes gone, she could ride down the streets and name all the families and relate their stories. It was at Dover Mill that she was smitten by the young man who delivered groceries, Ben Grigg. They were married and shared a life for 62 years.
In early adult years, Ruby was a member of Union Baptist Church. After moving to Shelby, she became an active member of Westview Baptist Church. She was especially proud of her work with the Prime Timers and the many activities and trips they enjoyed together.
Having been one of the first women hired at PPG Industries when the plant opened, Ruby retired from there after three decades.
Ruby had a kind and gentle spirit and enjoyed nurturing others of all ages. She especially treasured time spent with her grandsons. Ruby cherished every family gathering, especially Christmas celebrations. One tree was never enough!
Our family would like to thank the many special caregivers who gave Ruby's life comfort and dignity in the past years. Special thanks to the late Edna Falls, Miranda Weathers, Brenda Dellinger, Robbie Hunt and Rhonda Langford. Also our thanks thanks to the many caregivers at White Oak of Shelby, past and present, who gave Ruby compassion, friendship and assistance each day.
